>> welcome to 11 news saturday morning. i'm lisa robinson. >> i'm jennifer franciotti. top stories in a moment but first john is back with a look at the weather. beautiful full moon. >> it is. it's gorgeous out there.

it's very comfortable. what's going on. there's been a front stalled in the area. then the rain threatening overhead. dryer air is coming in, all right. so that means the humidity drops a little bit. temperatures drop a few degrees as well. still, some very comfortable weather it looks like this weekend with the rain chances pushing out of the area. here you can see the radar. we had a couple sprinkles, light showers overnight. most of it was south of us. now it's moving mostly off shore at least around the mid-atlantic region around the chesapeake bay. showers in southeast virginia. long island. up into new england. rhode island. connecticut, places like that. so, the rain chances slipping out of the area. the front itself stalled to the south. we'll see what happens as we approach the end of the weekend because there will be something el milling around out there. i'll have details coming up with the insta weather plus forecast in just a few minutes.

the orioles are now just three wins away from clinching their first playoff berth in 15 years. >> really exciting. they started their final home stand off last night in style after chris davis hit a two-run home run. ryan flaherty hits a grand slam in the bottom of the first, putting the o's up 6-1. that was all they would need in this one. he pitched a great game, getting daniel nava to end the inning. the o's win 9-1shg their 90th game. you can feel the magic at camden yards. we have more on how the fans are buckling up for the playoffs. >> a resounding national anthem o at camden yards friday night. it was the beginning to another o'-mazing night for a team taking the country by surprise and baltimore by storm. >> it's huge. i mean, we drove up from raleigh for this. we've been talking about it for weeks. yeah, it's cool. >> it's been 15 years since orioles park hosted a meaningful

final home stand for the home team, and fans are soaking it up. >> every time i come, i wear this. >> i cannot explain to you, because we can't afford ravens tickets but we still root for them. but we can afford orioles tickets. we are ready. we are excited. this is our time. >> it's been appreciation weekend and nine lucky fan weres randomly chosen to stand with the orioles during the national anthem. cornelius woodson iii stood with adam jones and brooks barns with manny machado. >> it makes you appreciate it all that much more now that it's happening this much more later. you enjoy every moment of it. >> the mayor presented jones with the key to the city for his work with kids in the community. a community she says is thankful in many ways for the o's sudden success. >> when i talked to them, i say we're happy that you're winning. what you're doing, you're

creating jobs. you're putting food on people's tables. we have games and tens of thousands of people in baltimore, whether they're going in restaurants or riding in cabs or staying in hotels, they are making our city more economically vibrant. >> and on saturday, something else special for the fans. brooks robinson's orioles legend sculpture will be unveiled. at camden yards, wbal tv 11 news. new this morning baltimore county police are trying to determine what led to a shooting at security square mall in wood lawn. it happened around 11:00 last night. police say a man was shot at least one time in the leg but would not confirm if it happened inside or outside of the mall. the victim was taken to shock trauma but his condition is unknown. police say so far no arrests have been made. police say officers found three men suffering gun shot wounds in the 1100 block of

carroll street around 6:30 last night. investigators say the victims suffered nonlife threatening injuries and now police are still looking for suspects. two people are recovering this morning after an accident. according to police, crews rescued two people after their vehicles collided near smallwood road in pasadena. that was around 6:00. a 56-year-old man suffered serious injuries, but is expected to recover. the condition of the other victim is not known. attention drivers who cruise the streets of baltimore city. the mayor has formed a task force to review the city's automatic traffic enforcement system. the board will consist of traffic safety experts, community activists, aaa and school representatives. board members will study the effectiveness of the cameras. >> we have kids that need to be safe going to and from school. that's what this is about. we want to make sure we're using our camera program to get the best results that we can to promote public safety.

>> the form eight of the task force comes amid concerns that cameras largely center on generating revenue about two weeks ago the city reported that cameras brought in $19.2 million, $4 million more than projected. city transportation officials say the charles street reconstruction project is set to begin on monday. the improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow are two goals of the $28 million project. the city officials say it's also about making charles street look more appealing between 25th street and university park way. that entire project will take two years and road closures and detours will be done in phases. >> few hiccups, traffic delays. we do ask motorists for their patients during this time until we can get through it. >> the project will include a wider road and pedestrian and bike lanes. it's scheduled to be finished by summer of 2014. it's a story the i team has followed since the first accusation. baltimore's city controller

accusing the mayor of purchasing a new phone system without going through the city's bidding process. after reviewing $675,000 purchase, the city's inspector general released a report yesterday. that report reveals city hall's it office deliberately withheld information from councilman jack young. also shows no price quotes were obtained from other companies, missing possible opportunities to save money. the mayor said her office has already made a number of recommended changes. time 5:07. it is chilly at the airport this morning. bpa is the chemical used in plastic and metal food containers. the compelling evidence that it may negatively impact a woman's reproduction system. who doesn't like free stuff. >> how you can get a number of items for nothing. love it. sign me up. but first outear looking at a live picture outside. we have your insta weather plus forecast. stay with us. 11 news saturday morning is just

>> welsh dry pavement around baltimore. radar shows you may have gotten a trace of rain couple hours ago but the rains moved off shore now. most of the clouds have, too. i don't think we'll be cloud free today. you can see the stars and moon out this morning. it's very very nice. one thing you'll probably notice during the day today this front gets farther from us, the air will be less humid. sultry the past couple days. look at the situation now. partly cloudy skies at that time airport. 58. excuse me at the inner harbor. 62. 76% the humidity. barometer falling. we have a west wind at seven miles an hour. we take a look at the almanac just to show you what happened yesterday. 79 the high. little on the humid side. so we weren't terribly warm yesterday but the temperatures

were above the average for the season. rainfall yesterday it all fell before the evening hours. last evening and overnight just a trace amount of precipitation. most of the rain was south of us. 217. 24.64 on the year. almost 7 inch bes low average on the season. we're a little below normal here at the end of the month, too. just over an inch or so as far as that's concerned. here's the radar. little wider view showing the bulk of the rain passed to our south. some showers did pass over the area, mostly just sprinkles. most of it fell on the eastern shore. so the rain last night wasn't all that significant. things moved along smoothly. 59 easton on the board walk 61, 59 edgewood. 50s filtering in to the west. 40s out in far western maryland. so that's that cooler, less humid air that's going to be filtering in during the day today. satellite image shows this front passing through and moving on to

the east, and this nicer air coming in. but there is a disturbance up in the great lakes, up in canada. that will play in our weather by the end of the weekend. by evening, the front will be well off shore. we see this little disturbance over the great lakes. with a little bit of limited shower activity with it. the air is pretty dry that's coming in. so when this disturbance passes through late sunday, there won't be much with it. but we'll keep an eye on it, all right. our forecast today gives us temperatures mostly in the low 70s. the key here, less humid conditions with a northwest breeze. insta weather future cast shows the dry conditions. until we get to sunday morning early. we start picking up a few scattered clouds. there's that disturbance off to our northwest. it pops a few showers. this makes it look worse than it will really be. we might pick up a couple sprinkles or brief shower late in the day sunday. little higher chance of rain comes in early next week. monday night into tuesday we begin to see another disturbance. that one coming up from the south.

welcome back to 11 news saturday morning. thanks for joining us. >> we'll get to those top stories in a moment, but first let's take another look outside with john. i know fall's here. winter's coming. but you got some nice days. >> we have. we've had some humid days the past couple of days. not terribly warm or anything like that. so i guess most people complain about humidity an our summertime weather here in the mid-atlantic region. so what little humidity we've had in the past couple days, along with that unsettled weather, rain threat's been hanging over our head. you can see by the radar satellite combination that that's finally slipped off to our south and east, all right? that means there will be a change this weekend with those rain chances moving away. it looks like we've hit the right slot here. we're not totally clear by sunday late afternoon or evening, something else may be there.

for the bulk of the weekend, i think things are looking up. you're going to have chance to break the leaves, something along those lines. we'll talk about the weather. the forecast is coming up in few minutes. >> a look at our top storys this morning. o's are winners once again. the orioles beat the red sox 9-1 last night to start off their final home stand of the season. ryan flaherty was the hero, hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the first, adding another run later in the game. pete gilbert will have more highlights wrand the o's sit in the playoff hunt later in sports. commuters in baltimore city will have to avoid charles street starting monday. city transportation officials say that's when reconstruction begins to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. the project totals $28 million. the entire project will take two years and the road closures and detours will come and go in phases and scheduled for completion in 2014.

in pennsylvania, voters shared horror stories of trying to comply with the new requirements. >> it took me days to get my id. >> the law has been tied up in court for months. a skwelt judge said he'll likely uphold most of it. but softened the photo id requirement for this election only. >> i feel i have the right to choose who i think should run this country. >> south carolina's new photo id requirement is in federal court. judges already rejected similar laws passed in texas and wisconsin. but voters in 31 states, many with republican majorities, will face some type of voteder id requirement this election. >> republican politicians are trying to manipulate the system for the benefit of their party. >> the law supporters want to prevent fraud, but legal rights advocates say voter fraud isn't a problem. >> you don't create a solution to a problem that's nonexistent.

>> protesters say it will hurt democratic voters. many will have to cast provisional ballots if they don't get a proper id in time. >> takes a while to determine whether or not these ballots should be counted. >> possibly delaying and even tilting the results in a presidential race that's expected to be close. i'm danielle lee for wbal tv 11 news. >> states have had laws cutting back on early voting making it more difficult to register to vote and making it harder for those with criminal convictions to vote. still ahead in the education alert, we'll tell you why so many students at one local high school are taking college level courses. if elections were held today, where would marylanders stand on expanded gambling? we'll break down the numbers and more. tfrjts key to the weekend weather, less humid, with mild temperatures. it will be very nice. details just ahead.

all right. take a look at that time radar first and fwifgive you three ho worth of radar to show you the weather system and clouds associated with it have moved on. that's progress with that front moving out of the picture. we get into a different air mass. the rain threat, the thing was stalled for awhile. just off to our north and west. we just kept -- we have this rain. we didn't get a lot of rain out of it. it was hanging over the head all the time. some of you did get close to an inch of rain. it was a pick and choose area as far as that's concerned. right now, it's 58 at the airport. inner harbor 62. we have partly cloudy skies. 78 fnt humidity. 29.98 the barometer. still on the low side and

falling. still on the process of trying to pull away from us fp wind has swung around westerly now. that's a favorable direct sthaun tends to dry the air mass out just a little bit. we look at that time radar a little longer summary of what's happening overnight instead of the most immediate three hours. the bulk of the rain, yellows, dark greens, passed pretty well to our south. that's where the significant accumulations were. we did get some green around our area. that's a sprinkle or light shower activity. that was about it. temperature wise, you can see the cooler air coming in. lighter green shades. temperatures still in the 60s. darker green shades mostly in the 50s. blue shades, temperatures have dropped into the 40s. chillier readings, oakland now 43. broad satellite picture. you can see this front or the effects of it from the eastern seaboard, new england, right down south of the area. this area was off to our

northwest. that's why that rain threat was hanging over our heads. by evening, the front will be well off shore. the rain will be to our south, what's left of it. especially down the carolinas and georgia. there will be a weather disturbance up in the great lakes. that may play in our weather sunday but not today. travel weather. the rains parts of new england down in the southeast around atlanta or so. the rest of the country looks pretty good. well down in texas and dallas. little activity west coast. nice and dry. temperatures autumn like around most of the country. 69 to 74 here. partly cloudy skies. little cooler than yesterday and less humid with a north/northwest wind at 6 to 12 miles an hour. insta weather future cast shows dry conditions will continue into sunday. although sunday we do pick up a few scattered clouds overnight and maybe a rain shower or sprinkle in the northern part of maryland on sunday evening. that's not a big chance for that though. we on give it about a 20% chance. over the weekend low 70s for

highs. essentially dry with rain chances increasing by monday night, tuesday into wednesday. expand gambling in maryland takes center stage. that's according to a gon les poll. they say it's a coin toss. that poll was released this week. the even results came as a surprise to those following the issue. many people tell 11 news they're confused by all the tv ads. david collins breaks down those numbers. >> question seven makes lots of promises. >> the question seven tv ad campaign regarding expanded gambling in maryland appears to have confused more than swayed voters. >> more anti-maryland ads. >> it is very confusing because of the fact that, first of all, they both have things to say that can be very convincing. >> do you find the ads annoying and confuseing? >> yes, i do. you're getting it from one side and then on the other hand, you

turn on another channel. you're getting it from another side. >> lot of people are confused about it. >> there's something about bringing opportunities from west virginia to maryland and improving schools. the message is muddled, i guess. >> a more scientific sampling of residents say 45% of registered voters favor expanding gambling, while 46% oppose. 9% are undecided. johns hopkins political science professor matthew krenston said the poll reveals unlikely allies united in opposition and for different reasons. >> for republican, gambling represents way to get resources for the expansion of government without having to impose tax. way of short circuiting the political system. that's probably why they are opposed to that. for african-americans, reasons may be a little more complex. first, many belong to religious denominations that take a dim view of gambling. second, the largest concentration of african-americans in the state is this country where the new

casino would go. >> pollsteres all probed who feels more intense about the issue? 54% of those claiming that expanded gaming is most likely to get them out to the polls plan to vote against it. so the pro and con tv ads may not be helping either side's cause. >> i think if they succeeded in making people angry on both sides. >> that was david collins reporting. imagine 80% voter turnout in the united states. believe it or not, that was the actual statistic voting in the 2008 presidential election in one segment of the population. adults from families earning at least $100,000 a year. on the flip side, the census bureau reports those earning $20,000 or less a year had a 52% turnout. the gap has to do with how much voters feel they have at stake. and also how much they feel that their vote will actually influence change. it's unfortunate, but when

school budgets get tight, usually the first thing to disappear is the school's music program. >> but one band instructor is doing something to change that. we'll tell you about it after the break. but first here's a look at last night's winning lottery numbers. [ woman ] ring. ring. progresso.

program. it's keeping your love of music alove. the benefits don't stop there. leah thompson loves playing her trumpet. >> i like the sound, like the soulful sound. it's in my blood. i just love music. my way of life. >> she took music classes at her school when she lived in new york. but when she moved to baltimore, she discovered her new school doesn't have a music program. >> since our school didn't have a band, i was sad because i love band. my mother told me about the program. >> hugh barns is the university band director. he started a saturday enrichment program to allow baltimore city students in 8th through 12th grade learn to play an instrument. >> lot of people written off the bizarre problems, social problems, academic problems, mental problems and what i'm trying to show people is that

you have to keep the childhood interest. >> the program started this month and has about 25 students right now. that number will grow throughout the year. they work one on one and in groups getting instruction from barnes and his music students at coppin state. barnes hopes that by getting the students involved in something they're passionate about, it will keep them in school and on the path towards college, maybe even a music scholarship. he all said it helps them in other areas of their life. >> to give a student an out, to give them a positive program from which to work on discipline, social skills, physical skills. >> the program will culminate with a conference this spring and then the students can continue their music education through a summer camp. wbal tv 11 news. county officials are counting a 73% increase in the number of students taking advanced placement classes. it took place in three years,

> friday marked the one year an veriesry of the orioles ending the red sox season here, completing boston's historic collapse in september. that seemed to propel the orioles into their season of just incredible play. well, this year the red sox have a chance to play spoiler. final home stand here at camden yards. last three games. red sox didn't do it. first inning. ryan flaherty. deep. gone. grand slam, first of his career. orioles score six. davis already homered. having lots of fun. ton mound, chris tillman was magnificent. eight innings. he only gave up one hit. he struck out four. the other crooked inning for the orioles came in the fifth.

manny machado to center. could not quite dive it in. yes, the orioles went ahead and got the win 9-1. flaherty just another of the orioles unsung heroes enjoying their time at camden yards. >> every night it's someone new, whether pitcher, hitter, play in the field, something. just keep riding it. tomorrow nine more innings. >> it's one of those things, guys get locked in at the plate, get locked in on the mound. it's part of the game of baseball. obviously, i'm going to embrace it. i don't expect it every day. i go out there every day. wherever the results may fall that's where it will be. >> between wednesday and friday's games chris davis homered in three consecutive at bats indeed. he was locked in. so five games left in the season. orioles though, they gained no ground on the yankees who also won on friday. tampa finally lost. its eight game win streak coming to an end. that bodes well as the rays fall

now four back of the birds. that's a look at sports. have a great day. >> keep winning. keep winning. all right. one of the strangest stories that went viral across the country this past week. a florida man accused of riding his horse, drunk, through a florida town. well, it drew a crowd and landed the man in jail. haley winslow has more on that wild ride. >> here he is on the left side of the screen in a full gallop, rounding the corner and down the street. charles cower and his horse blow through a stop sign and keep going. >> we tried to stop him and talk with him, told him to get off the horse. he took off in a gallop. >> the wild ride started at 10 a.m. monday and lasted more than five hours. >> it was large crowd of people that were beginning to follow him around. he had almost run over several persons with the horse, as well as in and out in front of cars.

he started to develop quite a crowd and stir in town. >> people would give himself athrong way. at one point his head phones stopped working so someone gave him new ear buds. but he wouldn't listen to police. and he and wild e continued to race away from officers who had to stop traffic and even a train for them. >> started to go in and out from where he was under the influence. we had to stop the train so we did not have a conflict or have him or the horse injured. >> wile e. is just fine. >> the horse is absolutely okay. he's no tireder than a cowboy would be after he got off a day's ride in the woods. >> that's cower's dad who caught up to the mayhem and pulled his son off the horse. he got away again and ran into swampy woods, but was chased down by police canines. >> that's my son and, you know, he's mentally depressed and family's behind him. we got him where we can help him.

force to review the city's speed and red light cameras. what city hall is trying to find out when the morning news continues. stay with us. >> baltimore shows up in a lot of best and worst lists, but the city was the toast of the town last sunday. and in a good way. in the midst of a lot of awards presented at the 64th annual primetime emmys, one of the biggest winners was baltimore on multiple fronts. it was a big night for baltimore productions, stars and even a jewelry designer.

baltimore native julie bowen took home another emmy as best supporting actress for her role in "modern family." her introduction mentioned her baltimore childhood, where her love of acting began in her back yard with her sister. in one of the strongest sweeps of the night, the baltimore based docu drama "game change" won four awards for acting, writing and direction the award for best actress went to julia louis dry fuss for her performance as vice president which is filmed in baltimore. she thanked her crew in baltimore and will return next month for a work on a second season for the now emmy award winning show. even the gift bags had taste of baltimore with jewel fry from a local designer. there was definitely enough of the city to go around.

rain accumulation generally south of washington. and annapolis. parts of the eastern shore got some, too. what's ahead and what are we talking about when we say the rain chance sneaks back up on sunday? details coming up in just a minute. oh. things are really getting exciting now inching closer. orioles now just three wins away from clinching their first playoff berth in 15 years. >> and they started this fine home stand off in style last night after cliff davis hit a two run home run. ryan flaherty hit the grand slam in the bottom of the first putting the o's up 6-1. that's all they would need in this one. they pitched a great game, getting nava here to end the sixth inning. the orioles go on to win 9-1. you can feel the magic at camden yards. we have more on how the fans are ready for the playoffs.

police say a man was shot at least one time in the leg, but they're not confirming whether it happened inside or outside of the mall. the victim was taken to shock trauma but his condition isn't known this morning. police say so far no arrests have been made. meantime, police are investigating a triple shooting in southwest baltimore. police say officers found three men suffering gun shot wounds in the 1100 block of carroll street around 6:30 last night. investigators say the victim suffered nonlife threatening injuries and police are still looking for suspects in that case. twofrjts people are recovering this morning after an accident. according to police, crews rescued two people after their vehicles collided on duval highway in pasadena. that happened around 6:00 last night. a 56-year-old man suffered serious injury but is expected to recover. the condition of the other victim isn't known right now. attention drivers who cruise the streets of baltimore city. the mayor has formed a task force to review the city's automated traffic enforcement system. the eight member board will

consist of traffic safety experts, community activists, aaa and school representatives. board members will study the effectiveness of the cameras. >> we have kids that need to be safe going to and from school. that's what this is about. we want to make sure we're using our speed camera program to get the best results that we can to promote public safety. >> form eight of the task force comes amid concerns that cameras largely center around generating revenue. about two weeks ago the city reported the cameras brought in $19.2 million, $4 million more than projected. city transportation officials say the charles street reconstruction project is set to begin monday, improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow are two goals of the $28 million project. city officials say it's also about making charles street between 25th and university park way look more appealing fp entire project will take two years. road closures will come and go in phases. >> there lab few hiccups,

we've had on again/off again rain. not everyone's gotten the same amount at the same time or anything like that. but that threat is moving out. the front's finally on the move and has taken the rain chance out of the picture. we can see it's off shore. most of it, closer to new england now. little bit down in the carolinas as well. skies have cleared to some extent. we still have a few scattered clouds. take a look at the current conditions outside. still dark. 56 degrees at the airport. that's the low so far this morning. now that the clouds have cleared we have dryer air. temperatures have started to drop off. there's a little chill out there. 60 at the inner harbor downtown. barometer rising at 30.00 even. it will continue to rise as the front moves off to the east. west winds at seven miles an hour. there were sprinkles around baltimore overnight last night, but the bulk of the rain has measured by the radar, the estimates were all south of the annapolis baltimore area and washington area down in the

lower eastern shore and southern maryland where quarter inch, half inch of rain, maybe more than that was measured. especially down around salisbury and parts of st. mary's county. here in the baltimore metropolitan area we missed out on the bulk of that. 61 annapolis. salsbury, 63. westminster fred dierick here. the shades go from green to blue. 43 in oakland, western maryland. satellite image shows, still a few scattered clouds around. the rain making clouds are out mostly over the ocean or up into new england. this dryer air is coming in. it's not cloud free, but at least dryer air. here's the front off to the east of us flp is a little weather disturbance up in canada. that may play in our weather tomorrow. but the trend here essentially for the weekend is dryer air's coming in with this front moving out of the picture. so, our forecast today is

calling for partly cloudy skies. cooler temperatures than yesterday. we were upper 70s yesterday. less humid. all right? maybe that's the best part. all right. 69 to 74 the high. north northwest winds at 6 to 12 miles an hour. boaters can expect a light northwest wind five to ten knots. one foot chop on the open waters in the bay. open water temperatures low to mid 70s. future cast shows dry conditions here. that little disturbance i mentioned by early sunday morning, we'll begin to pick up a few clouds. see the showers up in parts of pennsylvania. by the time we hit sunday afternoon, sunday evening, we might be clipped by something, a sprinkle, brief shower. doesn't look very significant. by late monday into tuesday, something more significant with a little more moisture coming up from the southwest. so, seven day forecast looks like this. low 70s for highs over the weekend. saturday and sunday. in general, partly cloudy skies. late in the day sunday. maybe a sprinkle or brief shower. higher rain chances monday night, tuesday into wednesday. still in the 70s next week.

in this morning's consumer alert, with many schools back in session, many families are struggling to pay for college. kiplinger pinpointed pit falls. first off, families should not wait for financial aid awards to make a decision. all decisions should be made before that point in the process. students should not count on scholarships from their school. merit scholarships usually go to the top 25% of all applicants

and most do not cover room and board. when choosing a loan, families should not choose a private loan just because the rate is lower. help could soon be on the way for stay at home parents denied a credit card because they don't have their own income. the consumer financial protection bureau is expected to propose a rule in the coming months to make it easier for people without personal income to qualify for credit cards. law currently requires credit card issuers to consider applicant's individual income instead of house hold income when making lending decisions. that means a lot of stay at hope parents have a hard time getting their own card even if they have perfect credit. the rule change is expected to be proposed before congress reconvenes in november. frnlts if you didn't enjoy a nice green lawn this summer tlshg are a few things that you can do to get your yard back into shape. we'll tell you where to get

nice morning so far. just a few scattered clouds around. we had some stars out, the moon and the sun is getting close to rising. the storm system hovering around the area more or less stalled.

it's beginning to make progress east and south and taking the rain chances with it. we do have scattered clouds and that's about it. mostly off shore around the mid-atlantic region. southern portions of the bay. still a couple of showers. rain nearby. it's down in the carolinas. we look at our view from the beach in ocean side. we do see some clouds there. mostly cloudy. closer to the front. it's not raining. the board walk looks wet. you can see the remains of the shower activity overnight last night. current temperature in ocean city is 60. here in town it's down to 56 at the inner harbor it's 61. 84% humidity, even the barometer. and we have a west wind at 7 miles an hour. all right. so the key to our we thr now that the front's moved east and south, less humid and a little cooler. the light green shades indicate

temperatures in the 60s. the darker green shades, readings for the most part fall into the 50s. blue temperatures have fallen into the 40s. this is that cooler, dryer air beginning to filter in to the regeneral. satellite image shows the scattered clouds around the area. the bright white clouds mostly down the carolinas and out to sea. that's the rain-making cloud activity. here's a front with the low pressure center overconnecticut. there is a little disturbance around james bay and hudson bay in canada. that will continue to spin around. and by sunday, late in the day, that could be an issue as it drops more towards the great lakes. also be some activity south of us. we'll be caught between. we'll have to see what happens. the basic trend is, with this front now through the area, e we have dryer weather coming in to our forecast today. partly cloudy skies. yesterday we were close to 80 for the high. less humid. that's a key. 69 to 74 for the high with those

rain chances monday night into tuesday and wednesday are up. majority of maryland schools are just trying to get by. reports out this week revealed that schools are dealing with a critical shortage in some areas. >> it's not a new problem, but it's one school districts are trying to solve long before potential teachers get to college. our education reporter has more on the krekive action being taken. >> does anybody have an answer for number 2? second part? nobody learned a different way to do it last year? >> ron gulf is a first year teacher in e ssex but he's no stranger on campus. he was able to complete college with the help of a scholarship from baltimore county in place to encourage students to choose a career in teaching. >> i love where i am. i do. i love teaching and i love the building that i'm in.

kids are great. you guys can come in. that's letter. i like it a lot so far. >> we think it's really cool that former graduate of our school would be able to come back and be a teacher. >> the state board of education nshg a new teacher staffing report, points out the need for school-based programs. >> i think it's very important for students, in terms of career counseling, no matter what field they go into but certainly when there are shortage areas in teaching and teaching is a wonderful career to embark on. >> math is just one of the state's critical shortage areas. there's a need for educators in career and technology, computer science, science theories like chemistry and physics, special education, second language and world languages. just down the hall from ryan's math class is eastern tech's teacher academy of maryland. that's where high school seniors are getting a test of the real world. >> they go through a series of courses and it kind of helps them decide, am i really interested in the profession? is it something i want to do in

first one is what's better for my heart, margarine or butter. i have heard conflicting reports. what's the real deal? >> the real deal on this, and i'm probably gonna get a lot of people up. check it out folks online. don't just take my word for it. take no one's word for it. honestly, years ago when transfats were allowed to be running rap pant in our foods and they were not checked by the government. really a tub of spreadable like an olive oil type margarine is a healthier choice. olive oil, vegetable oil, water, salt. when you look at a stick of butter it's solid room temperature. it's an animal product so it has animal based cholesterol and saturated fats. the tub margarines will be vegetable oil, nonsaturated fats and just you don't want to eat a ton of either one of them. don't eat stick margarine. >> what about i can't believe it's not buter? >> again, a decent choice. what you want to look at, read

the ingredients. you should be able to pronounce them. do you know what i mean? just a little bit of any of them is better than a lot. really now a days, it's really a better choice. >> our next viewer is concerned about cardio. she said she does an hour of cardioa day. she wants to know, do you have to do it an hour a day for it to count? sometimes i can't find that amount of time. sit worth doing 20 to 30 minutes? >> i remember years ago we came out with new guidelines. they said you had to do at least an hour six or seven days a week. it's like throwing the baby out with the bath water. can't get people to do 20 minutes. now an hour? my rule is 30 is better than 20 which is better than 10 which is better than none. even if you do five minutes, two hours later, five minutes three hours later, it literally adds up. 20 to 30 minutes is fine. do it like somebody's chasing you. don't not do it. >> it is cumulative, as you said.

it was a big night for baltimore production, stars and even a jewelry designer. baltimore native julie bowen took home another emmy as best supporting actress for her role in "modern family." her introduction mentioned her baltimore childhood wrshg her love of acting began in her back yard with her sisters. in one of the strongest sweeps of the night the baltimore based docu drama won four awards for acting, writing and direct slun. in the movie and miniseries competition. award for best actress in comedy went to julia louis dry fess. she thanked her crew and will return next month for work on the award winning show. even the gift bags had a taste of baltimore with jewelry from a local designer that went to the stars in the celebrity gift lounge. there is definitely enough of charm city to go around. hqhqhqhq

welcome to 11 news saturday morning. i'm lee lisa robinson. >> i'm jennifer franciotti. a check outside with john. beautiful moon this morning. >> the sun is beginning to break through. we've only had scattered clouds overnight. rain for the most part went south of us. almost too good to be true. don't jinx the situation.

but let's take a look at the radar. i'm going back a few hours here just to show you how the rain moved across the area last night. the bulk moved south of us. sprinkles in town. that was about it. the past two nights we had some rain north of the city and rain south of the city, minimal in baltimore itself. but some of you got as much as an inch of rain in the past couple days. this last episode was in the lower eastern shore. now it's off to sea at least for the time being. so we're in pretty good shape for a day or so. now tlshg is one bit of a fly in the ointment for the weekend weather. i'll address that in just a few minutes so stick around. orioleses are now just three wins away from clinching their first playoff berth in 15 years. >> really excited. they started their final home stand off in style last night after chris davis hit a two run ho
